Faces and Fabrics, Light and Color
India is home to over one sixth of the worlds population, has over two thousand ethnic groups, has every major religion represented and is a mosaic of shapes, smells, colors, fabrics, architecture and human experience. Photographic opportunities are endless and varied. The human condition is very much in evidence and on this photography tour we will be in the thick of it capturing images. David Wells will be guiding our small group and providing both individual and group photography instruction. David will be working with you on lighting, composition, depth of field and provide photo review. He is a seasoned Indian traveler and will be bringing us to the right places at the right time of day to photograph the people, temples, villages and markets. David has been to India over 30 times on assignments as well as two Fullbrights. Our itinerary will keep us thoroughly engaged and moving and provide a wide range of experiences. This trip is for photography enthusiast of all levels and even spouses who are not photographers are invited.
Varanasi, also known as Benaras, is the holiest city in India, and the ultimate pilgrimage spot for all Hindus. It is the oldest inhabited city in the world. Mark Twain wrote; "Benaras is older than history, older than tradition, older than legend and looks twice as old as all of them put together." We will be photographing the pilgrims in the morning, the cremation ghats, the numerous ageless temples and capture images of the finest silks, gold and silver brocades. The group will wander the streets and alleys at a slow pace capturing images of traditional paintings and crafts.
We will travel through Rajastan, on the edge of the desert in a 15 seat mini bus and photograph the major points of interest. Jodhpur, referred to as the blue city is an urban sea of indigo washed cube shape homes and will be explored. The old city which surrounds the Mahrangarh Fort makes for an interesting contrast between beauty, squalor, and where man and animal peacefully coexist in public places. Jaipur, known as the emerald or pink city is a consolidation of the royal past. These rugged looking, pink turban wearing men and women in shawls have an air of royal tradition and attitude. The forts and monuments, enrich the photographic experience. Jaipur cuisine is distinct and considered healthy and nutritional and at the end of the day a great meal is always a special treat.
The jewel of India, the Taj Mahal located in Agra will be photographed at both sunrise and sunset. This perfect marble structure surprises most in its sheer size and imposing architecture. You will be awed by this most extravagant monument built in the name of love by Emperor Shahjahan in memory of his beloved wife. Photographing this structure at different times of the day from different angles will surely enhance your skill level.
