Peru

Peru has become the highlight for most people traveling in South America. The ancient capital of the Inca Empire and its surroundings has a combination of history, mysticism and authenticity that is rarely equaled by any other country in the continent.

Exploring Machu Pichu is on all adventure travelers list of places to go. As the light changes from sunrise to sundown so does the view of this lost city which is considered one of the most impressive structures ever built.

The Sacred Valley is the hub of the Inca empire and ruins and small villages such as Pisac, Ollantaytambo, Chinchero have been inhabited for over 700 years. The indigenous culture lives on and the people residing there still dress, farm and weave like their ancestors did. In colonial Cusco, Quecha speaking descendents of the Incas conduct commerce. Wearing incredibly colorful garb they can be photographed as they walk the cobblestone streets past the plazas and massive smooth stone buildings.

Lake Titicaca, the world's highest lake has the floating island of Uros. Visiting this island will have the traveler question his views on cultural tourism. The islands of Amantani and Taquile are wonderful places to observe the best weaving in South America and to see indigenous communities still in self isolation.

Martin Chambi (1891-1973) was the only indigenous Latin America photographer of his time. He was a prolific portrait and documenatry photographer who roamed the towns and countryside of the Peruvian Andes. Chambi amassed a comprehensive collection of archeological sites, indigenous people, views of Cusco and the magnificent topography of this area. During this photography excursion we will follow in his footsteps.

Being led by an experienced English speaking bilingual guide from Cusco we will travel the region and stay in the communities we photograph. This will give us an opportunity to shoot during the best light and interact with the local people. Our well traveled and experienced photography instructor John Rizzo will provide both group and individual instruction. Image review, group critique and assignments will help us enhance our photography skills.

We have partnered with a Cusco based land operator that is Peruvian owned. They believe in responsible and ethical travel practices and contribute to the community. They have been recommended in the 2009 edition of Footprints.
