Ethiopian Historical Circuit: September 19 - 29th, 2019
Ethiopian North: History, nature, religion, wildlife. This 10 day photography tour will take you to the historical north where you will have a mix of opportunities. The group will shoot ancient monasteries on Lake Tana where the incense is wafting, the priests are chanting, pilgrims in white cloth are praying and the boat ride on Lake Tana is serene. Bahir Dar is a pleasant city and the gateway to the Northern historical circuit. In Gondar you will shoot the historic castles and palaces as well as shoot the bustling market. The group will visit the last remaining village that has Ethiopian Jews and the local market which is always great for street photography Antiquities are in abundance in Axum and they include the Northern Stelae Field, Abba Pentalewon, Ark of the Covenant Chapel. This ancient city has more UNESCO ruins than anywhere in Sub-Saharan Africa. Not overly touristed this city is a living museum. In the UNESCO Simien National Park we will travel by jeep as well as trek to photograph the gelada baboons walia Ibex, giant mountain goats with impressive, arching horns, and the rare Ethiopian wolf — only around 400 survive in the country’s highlands. The scenic view are majestic in this high altitude park. The group will lodge at the Simien Lodge which has a great view of the surrounding mountains. The thousand year old rock hewn churches in Lalibela make for great photography. Pilgrims from all over trek to this holy site. Early morning we will shoot the priests and pilgrims. Their majestic, almost classical exteriors are reminiscent of Ancient Greece and Rome, but with hieroglyphics and Ge'ez carved in the walls. Small arched doors let you inside to admire the intricately painted ceilings, in which recognizable murals of the Madonna and Child are joined by a wandering lion or a dry Acacia tree. Every church is extraordinary in its own way, but the best known is the Church of St. George, which is in the shape of a Greek Orthodox cross. White-robed pilgrims drift around the four columns for hours. |
